St. Nicholas Abbey – Heritage Steam Railway
About This Listing
The sight of a 100-year-old steam locomotive chugging across the hillside with the Atlantic Ocean filling the background stirs the heart. A truly heritage adventure, and the newest attraction at St Nicholas Abbey, recreating a bit of history, and allowing visitors to experience hitherto inaccessible areas of the plantation.
Here you can board the newly restored 1914 Jung steam locomotive, Tjepper #5, which started its working life in the sugar fields of Java, and learn about the history of the original Barbados Railway, which closed in 1937. Meandering through the sugarcane fields, ancient mahogany woods and the 40 ft rock cuttings of an abandoned limestone quarry, to the spectacular wild Atlantic view at Cherry Tree Hill where visitors are invited to assist with turning of the locomotive - for fun!
