Waste Recycling Assistance Programme (WRAP) The Sanitation Service Authority (SSA) of Barbados and the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA) launched WRAP on May 26th, 2006, at a seminar held at Accra Beach Hotel and Resort in Barbados at 8:30 a.m. The purpose of the seminar was to provide a forum for the recyclers to make presentations to hoteliers and restaurateurs about their individual aspects of recycling. It is hoped that such a forum will stimulate recycling activities within the hotel and restaurant sector thereby reducing the waste entering the landfill sites. Recyclers take waste materials and produce an entirely new product after processing the waste. Waste Brokers collect the recyclables and prepare them for transport and use by recyclers. The following table lists businesses involved in recycling. It tells you the items that can be recycled and gives contact information for the entities providing the recycling services:

Organizing your Green Team What are Green Teams? A Green Team is any group of people who want to get together to discuss ways to lower their workplace’s impact on the environment. They can be made up of any number of people, be focused on different issues and work in different ways. Goals can be modest or ambitious - what counts is doing something and encouraging or facilitating others to do something too! What sort of things do Green Teams do? This really depends on the kind of business or department you work in, but could include encouraging people to turn off lights and switch off PC monitors through to measuring paper use and seeing if it can be reduced over a time period. It could mean setting out a recycling box and having the team empty it, encouraging people to bring in mugs instead of using plastic cups or organizing bulk buying of compact fluorescent light bulbs for people to use at home. Anything goes! How often should Green Teams meet? As often as is necessary to address obstacles affecting target plans until the goals of the team are met. The team can also meet approximately every four months to present and analyze data relevant to their programmes (i.e.. electrical bills, invoices for paper bought etc. that span over a series of months). You may also wish to contact similar Green Teams to exchange information. How do I/we set one up? Just declare yourselves to be one and start to do what you can – see the Green Tips listed below. You can also start by forming partnerships with the Recyclers and Waste Brokers listed above.

DID YOU KNOW?
Environ Bins and Pet Patrol Van Project This is an on-going national project conducted in collaboration with the Barbados Tourism Authority (BTA), Sanitation Service Authority (SSA), Simpson Motors and Ministry of Tourism. It was officially launched in September 2006, with the unveiling of the Environ Bins and the Pet Patrol Vehicle. This public/private sector project is a positive move in helping to provide a cleaner and healthier environment for Barbadians and visitors to Barbados. The Pet Patrol Vehicle allows the SSA to remove animals struck in vehicular accidents or that might have died at home from natural causes. The public is required, however, to call 426-4625 or 4-ANIMAL for assistance. The Environ Bins are special tamper proof garbage receptacles that have been placed at strategic locations across the island such as bus-stops, near schools and fast-food outlets as well as in tourist areas including Holetown, St. Lawrence Gap, Speightstown and Oistins. When the Pet Patrol is between jobs, it will also deal with the addition to the fleet of litterbins across the island of Barbados that were designed by Environ; by collecting roadside refuse which makes for a tidier nation.

If bins are not in sight, don’t forget – the SSA is still offering reusable car garbage bags which was also done with the help of the BHTA, and they are available at the SSA's headquarters on the 2nd floor (or top floor), National Petroleum Corporation Building, Wildey, St. Michael, Barbados.

Purchase Your Sea Turtle T-shirts The BHTA strongly supports the Barbados Sea Turtle Project (BSTP) which promotes the conservation of sea turtles in Barbados. In an effort to raise funds for the project, the BHTA embarked on an initiative to create and sell 'Sea Turtle' T-shirts (see below). They would make excellent souvenirs which can be sold in gift shops. The T-shirts can be purchased for BDS$25.00 from the BHTA office, 4th Avenue, Belleville, St. Michael, Barbados W.I. between the hours of 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. T-shirts are also available from The Bookshop, The University of the West Indies - Cave Hill Campus, Cave Hill, St. Michael, Barbados W.I. For further information, please contact the BHTA Secretariat at Tel: 426-5041 or by email address membership@bhta.org.

Other Environmental Projects Other Projects in which the BHTA has been involved include various Beautification Projects that concern improving the aesthetics of several areas in Barbados to make them more pleasurable for locals and visitors. Another one involves our well known Holetown Bridge here in Barbados. This project will entail repairs and beautification of the bridge at Holetown. This re-habilitation project is expected to prevent the re-occurrence of the sludge problem which results in the pollution of the beaches in the areas due to waste water entering the seas through the river mouth under the bridge.
